We’re always looking for fresh ways to make a real difference in the lives of people in rural communities. That’s why we’re piloting a project called Powered by Bees, which blends solar energy with beekeeping to bring both clean energy and new opportunities to areas that need it most.
The idea behind Powered by Bees is simple, yet powerful. We want to provide families with affordable solar energy to light their homes, while also creating economic opportunities through beekeeping, particularly for women. The goal is to address two major challenges in rural areas: access to reliable, affordable energy, and a steady income stream.
Many families in rural areas still rely on kerosene and other expensive and harmful energy sources. Powered by Bees gives them a chance to switch to solar power, which improves their lives by giving them clean, affordable energy to light their homes, charge their phones, and more. This not only makes everyday tasks easier, but it also means kids can study after dark and families don’t have to worry about the health risks of burning kerosene.
On the beekeeping side, we’re teaching women how to manage both honey production and solar system distribution. This allows them to earn an income while developing business skills, leadership abilities, and financial independence. It’s about more than just giving women a job – it’s about giving them the tools to succeed and lead in their communities.
Right now, Powered by Bees is in its pilot phase. We’re working with one women-led Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) to test and refine our approach before expanding. This phase is crucial because these VSLAs are community-driven and will be key to the project’s long-term success.
We also know that affordability is one of the biggest barriers to solar energy. That’s why we’re making sure that the families who receive solar systems can pay for them gradually, using the income from honey sales to help offset the cost. This way, families can make the switch to clean energy without financial strain.
Our goal is to expand this project to other rural communities across Malawi, building a model that’s sustainable, scalable, and truly transformative. We are looking to build partnerships with experts and financial institutions to ensure that the project can grow in a way that benefits everyone involved.
